It’s important to familiarize yourself with the various features of your home, including your gutters. This way, you’ll know how to maximize their use and care for them properly. Gutters, in general, are designed to protect your property from rain and water damage. Without an efficient gutter system, water could get stuck and back up to your roof — causing you bigger problems.
Gutters come in various forms. In this post, M&A Exterior Home Improvement discusses the basics of K-style gutters.
K-Style Gutters
The Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors National Association (SMACNA) has come up with a list of the 12 most common rectangular gutter designs. K-style is the 11th gutter design in this series. Hence, its name was taken from the 11th letter of the alphabet.
K-style gutters are found on around 80% of roofing systems in the U.S. Because of their shape and seamless form, these gutters are known for being efficient and long-lasting. Instead of having several gutter sections spliced together, they are made with a continuous flow from the eaves in each section of your home.
According to gutter experts, K-style gutters are available in four sizes — 5, 6, 7 and 8 inches. The 5- and 6-inch gutters are the most commonly used in residential properties, while the 7- and 8-inch gutters are typically used in commercial buildings.
Materials
- Aluminum. It is one of the most common K-style gutter materials. It is considered the go-to choice because it is lightweight and resistant to corrosion.
- Copper. Copper is significantly more durable than aluminum, and it can be more expensive too. Copper gutters have a traditional appearance that can make a roof stand out even from afar.
- Galvalume. Because galvalume is constructed of steel covered with aluminum and zinc, it is known to be more durable than aluminum and copper. Compared to the two, this material is commonly used for warehouses, factories, buildings and other commercial properties due to its durability.
