Should You Be Worried About Loss of Granules from Your Roof?

Asphalt shingles are covered by a layer of granules that protects the backing material from UV radiation and provides the roofing color. Some of these granules can come loose as the roof ages, and as a trusted local roofing contractor, we at M & A Roof Home Improvement are often asked by homeowners whether this is a problem. In today’s post, we take a look at what causes asphalt shingle granule loss—and whether or not you should be worried about it.

What Causes Granule Loss?

The granules on asphalt shingles are made from crushed stone, minerals, and coloring agents. During manufacture, they are machine-pressed onto one side of still-hot asphalt-soaked backing sheets. The granules become embedded as the uncut sheets cool down. Since the granules are not laminated, it is normal for some of the granules to come loose at any time. In fact, a few loose granules are considered part of normal roofing wear and tear.

However, there are a few conditions that should be taken as a sign that your roof may need the attention of your residential roofing contractor. The first is the number of granules that end up in the gutters. If the resulting sediment is about an inch deep, it means your roof is shedding granules at a higher rate. Next is the roof’s age. If your roof is more than 20 years old, it is likely that your roof is approaching its expected life span and may need to be replaced.

Can Your Roofer Fix Granule Loss?

Granule loss cannot be reversed. If you have a roof that is past its expected life span, you should start planning on replacing the roof. As the backing material deteriorates from age, it loses its hold on the granules, which means more granules will come loose in the years that follow. A roof that’s past its prime is also at higher risk of leaks and structural damage. However, if your roof is within its expected life span, it is possible that the shingles were defective and may be eligible for warranty repairs. When in doubt, schedule an inspection with your roofing contractor.
