Asphalt shingles remain one of the most popular roofing choices in the country. This is because of their versatility, affordability and ease in installation compared to other roofing materials. Despite this, many misconceptions about asphalt shingles still run rampant in the industry. Local roofing contractor M&A Exterior Home Improvement debunks the myths and explains the truth about your asphalt shingle roof.
Truth: It is conventional knowledge that light-colored roofs can help decrease cooling costs. That’s because they’re capable of reflecting the sun’s heat, unlike dark-colored ones that absorb the heat. However, dark-colored roofs do not increase your cooling costs that much. As long as proper insulation and ventilation are in place, your roof and home can keep out the heat and ensure consistent indoor comfort, especially during the summer season.
Truth: Asphalt shingles once contained asbestos as a way of increasing the material’s fire resistance. However, this was phased out in the 1960s because of the associated health risks. Since then, asphalt shingles are manufactured with safer fireproofing materials and components.
Truth: This is actually true, but it’s not something that you should worry about and does not mean a roof repair is due. During the manufacturing phase, your shingles are covered with granules. Most granules will stick, but there will be loose ones. During installation, some of these loose granules will be shaken off from the shingle. Eventually, rain will wash the loose granules away and you will find them on the ground by your downspouts.
Truth: Curing is when an adhesive or any binding substance achieves its final strength. Some cure instantly, while others take a few days – and some heat exposure – to completely cure. This is the case in most asphalt shingle installations.
